Newsletter: Week of September 21st

September 25th 2015
Ms. Mac’s Newsletter

Hello families of the Kindergarten class of Room 138,

The start of the school year is well underway and the students are enjoying their routines and responsibilities within the classroom and throughout the school.  I want to thank all the parents who were able to make it to Open House.  The students loved showing their work to you and it was a wonderful way to have each child be a leader and take pride in their learning.  I also want to thank the parents who volunteered to join us on our apple orchard field trip to Riverview Farm.  It was a great experience to encompass what we had been learning, and the students had a blast.

In science the students are continuing to learn about the different ways apples can be used.  The class reviewed that the apples can be used to make apple pie, apple juice, apple cider, and apple sauce.  As a team, we worked together to make apple sauce yesterday. Each person was able to add apples, cinnamon, and sugar to our crock pot.  The students observed the apples turning into sauce right before our eyes.  It was a tasty snack at the end of the day.

The students will be continuing to practice forming their words on the Cloud, Plane, Grass, and Worm lines throughout the year. The class is doing a fantastic job writing letters, words, and sentences. The lowercase letters that we have learned since the beginning of school have been t, b,  and f.  This week m and n were introduced.  As the students learn more letters and gain more sight words simple sentence structure will be implemented into their daily writing.

In Math, students have been sorting, graphing, and organizing shapes by color, size, corners, curved lines, and straight lines as a group.  They have done scavenger hunts and counting tasks to strengthen their counting and shape recognition.  The class is starting to see patterns when counting by five’s and tens during our Number Corner in our Morning Meeting.

I have created a class blog and that is where I will be posting the Newsletter from now on.  For those of you who would still like a hard copy please contact me so I can send one in your child’s communication folder every other Friday. Attached to this Newsletter will be directions for how to follow my information on the blog.  I will put up pictures from the week and other upcoming events.  Your children have been working hard and having fun learning.  I am enjoying getting to know each of them a little more each day!

Sincerely,

Tara MacCallum
