Hello Second
Grade Families,
I hope
everyone had a great start to their week.
I have a few announcements and reminders:
Picture Day is this
Friday, September 21st.
Please have your child bring in their picture form or complete the
online order before the end of the week.
I will also be carrying
out reading testing on Friday so the class will have a substitute teacher.
Since I will not be in the classroom to monitor the normal
routines, the class will not be carrying out the next mystery science
experiment. We may do two next week, or
just save it for continuing Fridays.
Wednesday, September 19th the students will have a guest from VINS in to teach them about pollination and
different pollinators. This introduces into our Monarch
Butterfly unit.
Both second grade
classes have now completed the “Words their Way Spelling Inventory”. Ms. Jenkyn and I are going to use this information, to group
students to practice spelling words that are appropriate for each child. We are still in the grouping process, and
that is why there are no spelling words this week.
Our class
has been learning about short vowel sounds of a, e, i, o, and u. We have also been studying diagraphs in
words (ch, ck, wh, th, and sh).
This week
the class will continue practicing letter and word formation in narrative
writing. Students are really focusing on
capital letters in the beginning of sentences and punctuation at the end of sentences.
During these first weeks of school, I am building up student stamina for
writing.
In math, the
students have been learning about pictographs and glyphs. Today the students created beetle glyphs
showing: What month their birthday is in, what their favorite season is, what
their favorite sport is, and how many people are in their family. We will
continue to be using visuals like graphs and charts to show or explain our work
throughout the year.
If there are
any questions or concerns please feel free to email back. I can also print copies for anyone who would rather a hard copy of this update.
I hope
everyone has a great night.
Sincerely,
Ms. Mac J
